What is RSS?

If you haven't yet started using RSS feeds, you're missing out on an easy, time-saving way to get information online. And it's free!

RSS is a way to get the information you want with no muss, no fuss. With RSS, your favorite web sites come to you. Although it seems oh so technical at first, you'll find it's easy to subscribe to RSS feeds, and even easier to unsubscribe. Think of it as "really simple subscribing." (RSS actually stands for "really simple syndication.")

There are no privacy issues, no email or personal information to give out when you subscribe. You can scan the headlines and short blurbs quickly. If something catches your eye, click on it and read on. What a time-saver! So much easier than sorting through email or browsing through web sites.

Once you start receiving RSS feeds, you won't know how you ever lived without them.

How to Receive RSS Feeds

There are two methods for receiving RSS feeds: on the web, or through an RSS reader. Both are free.

On the Web

Both MY Yahoo! and My MSN have web based RSS readers that are simple to use. You can set it up (and get the feed for California Beach Blog) by clicking one of the buttons below. If you don't already have an account, they'll lead you through the steps. It's free to create and very convenient.

Download a Free RSS Reader

You'll find a variety of free RSS Readers online. They're simple software programs that allow you to read your favorite RSS feeds. To get you started quickly, here are two of the most popular readers.

For Windows -- RssReader

For Mac -- NetNewsWire

Once you've got your software set up, all you have to do is give the software the addresses of the RSS feeds you want to subscribe to. The easiest way to do that is to look for those little orange RSS and XML buttons on your favorite web sites, blogs, or news sources.

Just right-click on the button. Then select "Copy Shortcut" ("Copy Link Location" for Mac), and paste that URL into your RSS Reader.

(If you goof, and just click on the button, you'll reach a page full of code. The address in the browser window is the address of the RSS feed. You can copy and paste that into your software.)

Now you're subscribed. Go ahead and try it with my feed.
