Gray Whale Pictures

These gray whale pictures show the most common species spotted along the California coast. Their yearly migration has spawned a booming whale-watching industry. However, they can also be seen from shore in the winter and spring months.

Gray whales often travel in groups, and their blow plumes can reach up to 15 feet high. They're medium sized whales, about 45 feet long, weighing 50 tons.

The best time to see gray whales is in the early spring, when they head north with their newborn calves. They move slower and keep closer to shore when traveling with calves.
