Dog Friendly Beach Campsites in Northern California

Question: Where are there dog-friendly beach campsites in Northern California?

Answer: There are actually quite a few dog-friendly campsites at Northern California beaches. Most state parks allow dogs in the campgrounds, but they're usually not allowed on beaches or trails. There are also county parks and private campgrounds that are dog-friendly.

Since several people have asked about this topic, I did a bit of research and compiled a list of dog friendly beaches and campgrounds in Northern California. On that page, you'll also find information on the pet regulations, and links to the dog policies of the various agencies that operate Northern California beaches and parks.

Humboldt County is clearly the most dog friendly. Not only do they have several campgrounds where dogs are welcome, but dogs may also go unleashed on many Humboldt County beaches.

Dogs on California Beaches

Question: Are dogs allowed at Salt Point State Park? What about Ft. Ross beach?

Answer: Dogs aren't allowed on the beach at either Salt Point or Fort Ross. However, there are quite a few beaches at Sonoma Coast State Park where they're allowed. California State Parks lists specific beaches where dogs are allowed. They also provide guidelines for visiting California State Beaches and Parks with your dog.

Here's what the park brochures have to say about dogs:

Salt Point State Park: "Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times and are permitted only in the developed areas, except the group campground and walk-in campsites. They must be kept in a tent or vehicle at night. Only service dogs are allowed on trails."

Fort Ross State Historic Park: "Dogs are allowed only in the main parking area and in the campground. They must be on a six-foot leash at all times and remain in a tent or vehicle at night."

Beaches operated by county or city agencies have their own rules. The dog policy for Sonoma County Parks requires that dogs be kept on a leash except in designated parks, but it doesn't specifically mention beaches. It'd be a good idea to call first to check it out.

sunday funday!
by: Daniel

It's the best time to bring your dog to the beach. There are countless beaches to bring your dog to in Santa Barbara county. Henry's beach is notorious for dogs and it is always a good time! I was just there and my puppy loved it there! We had a great Sunday afternoon enjoying the sunshine as well as the waves. We stayed at a nearby hotel; the Sandman Inn (www.thesandmaninn.com). So affordable and the location was perfect!
